Fitness

The school has a large modern gym, which includes a squash court, basketball courts and fitness suite equipped to a standard which bears comparison with the most modern commercial fitness centres.

As part of the Physical Education programmes, pupils are given training in most of the popular forms of sport, including badminton, squash, basketball, rugby, soccer, unihock and athletics.

Sport and Drama

Gaelic football and hurling are the principal games in St. Declan's. In 2002 the school won the Leinster U16B hurling title for the second year in succession. In football, 2002 was an even more momentous one. We won the Leinster U16A title, a major achievement for the school and a significant one for Dublin football.

A mark of the current standing of St. Declan's in football is that the current Dublin senior team features Alan Brogan and Barry Cahill, recent past-pupils, on the team along with teacher Senan Connell.

Basketball, soccer, table-tennis, golf and badminton are also played in the school.

Drama, chess, debating and choir are other activities which greatly enrich the life of the school. In recent years St. Declan's pupils have achieved great distinction in debating in schools and university competitions.

Another recent achievement of which the school is proud is the Oscar nomination won by Cathal Gaffney (1988) with his highly distinctive animation "Give up yer aul sins!"

Foreign Links

Since its foundation St.Declan's has been involved in foreign travel. It was one of the Christian Brothers' schools involved in the pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1966. Most years two school tours involve students from St.Declan's College. Since 2000 the school has been involved in tours to Paris, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Prague and the Italian Dolomites.

St Declan's also participates in exchange visits with schools in continental Europe. These have involved Transition Year students who have travelled to Ingolstadt in Bavaria and Vega in Norway. Both of these were part of the Socrates programme of the EU and were run with the aid of Léargas. As part of the exchanges the two school groups produce projects, The "Enflüs.... Flüs" with Reuchlin Gymnasium, Ingolstadt and "The Road to Independence" with Vega School, Vega, Norway. Both were very rewarding experiences and the school is always on the lookout for further exchange possibilities.

The college has also had language exchanges with colleges in both France and Belgium.

A very exciting path in our foreign travels has been the link established with the Christian Brothers School in Lukulu, Zambia.
