The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme
  • LCVP provides a strengthening of the vocational dimension of the Leaving Certificate programme through relating and integrating specific pairings of subjects.
  • The vocational relevance of the subjects is strengthened by Link Modules which sharpen the vocational focus of those subjects.
  • The programme enhances the Leaving Certificate as a preparatory qualification for work and for further study.

Curriculum

The first thing to be understood about the LCVP as offered in St. Declan's is that pupils take the Leaving Certificate examination in 6 subjects. These are:

Irish
English
Mathematics
Geography
Business
Construction Studies

In each of these subjects, the standard Leaving Certificate syllabus is studied and the examination is taken in the normal way.

The results are certified and third-level points are earned in the normal way.

To the normal Leaving Certificate, the LCVP adds:

  • The study of French or German
  • The study of three vocationally oriented LINK MODULES
  • Religious Education
  • Physical Education
  • Personal Development
  • Computer Studies

Link Modules

What are the Link Modules?

  • Enterprise Education
  • Preparation for work
  • Work Experience

How are the Link Modules designed?

The following is a brief description of the three mandatory Link Modules.

In general, the Enterprise Education module is designed to integrate closely with the vocational subject grouping followed by a pupil. The module will include skill and knowledge based areas such as:

  • Active learning-skills through industry-linked project development (marketing, patents, specifications, etc.)
  • Practical skills for business
  • Relevant Information Technology skills
  • Communications and Interpersonal skills

The Preparation for Work module will provide pupils with opportunities for a structured interaction with the workplace environment. This will normally involve:

  • School-industry links with visits to industrial and commercial enterprises, including work shadowing
  • Case-studies of local and national enterprises
  • Interview techniques and job search skills

These two modules will comprise at least 2 to 3 periods per week of the LCVP timetable.

The Work Experience module may involve placing pupils for a period of time in a workplace situation performing duties under supervision. Alternatively, the work experience may take the form of either observing a work situation (work shadowing), or work simulation in a mini-company. All or part of this module may be implemented during school holiday time.

The Work Experience module will comprise two weeks or 80 hours over the two years of the programme.

Physical Education

Aims

1. To help each and every child reach optimum development, encouraging "exercise consciousness" and enabling students to experience the pleasure of fitness.

2. To give the pupils the opportunity to share the value of Physical Education and games, thus enabling them to meet one another in a "play" situation.

3. To provide a challenge and adventure in life, to experience achievement and appreciation.

4. To lay the foundations for optimum use of leisure time in the lives of our students after leaving St. Declan's.

Some of the activities in P.E include:

Athletics, Cross-Country, Basketball, Badminton, Gaelic Football, Health-Related Fitness, Minor Games, Soccer and Volleyball.
